Remember, you will always be your child’s best teacher. Many children struggle at school because they are still mastering important life skills at home. Take time to develop your child’s life skills at home. See the list of skills below.
Essential Skills at Home
No matter what type of disability or learning difficulty your child may have, make sure your child arrives to school on time and ready for learning!
The right supports at home can help your child master Essential Skills at School. ,
Here are examples of how to assure your child has a successful day at school:
Relationships: Maintain a positive relationship with your child. Positive Relationships at home help students build positive relationships at school. Teach your child to learn from you and from other trusted adults. When you build a positive relationship at home, you are supporting the following Essential Skills: Social Communication skills.
Wellness: Your child needs to sleep well, eat well, and have a good digital media plan. When you build wellness, you are supporting your child’s growth in two critical Essential skills: Self-Regulation Skills and Executive Skills.
A schedule of Privileges and Routines. When you build a schedule of privileges and routines, you are supporting the following Essential Skills: Self-Regulation and Executive skills.
More skills. Friendships and Homework skills are important skills to build at home too! But, work on the three skills above first. They will pave the way for your child’s success in many areas, including developing friendships, and developing homework skills.
